This unpublished photo is of the Caldwell (DD 605) on 13 Dec, 1944, at San Pedro Bay, Leyte. This is the result of the previous day's kamikaze damage received in ORMOC BAY, while escorting 13 LCI's and LCM's to resupply the Army's 77 Division. USS Reid (DD 369) was sunk on the way in, Caldwell hit on the way out resulting in 33 killed and 40 wounded, including the captain. USS Coghlan, Smith, Edwards, and Conyngham rounded out the screen for the group during 11-13 Dec, 1944. This picture shows the results of 2 bombs hitting in the forecastle area and #2 5" handling room. Coghlan served as screen flag on the way out after transferring flag officers off Caldwell. Several enemy planes were shot down by the escorts and by Marine Corsairs in the area. This photo comes courtesy of Ralph Reed via Warren Colehour EM1 of USS Bailey DD492.
