Company 50 US Naval Training
Station, Newport RI in 1940 One half of this group was
assigned to our Mayo, while the other half was assigned to the
USS Kearny DD432. Quackenbush is directly in back of the
riflemen on the left, while Gerald Kelly is the riflemen to
the right. |

B1/c. Served on Mayo:14 October 1940 to 9 May 1943.

Joseph Arnold, MM2/c. Served on
Mayo:26 January 1942 to 4 April 1944. |
James "Red" Dunn Jr.,
MM1/c. Served on Mayo:27 December 1940 to 24 January
1944. Dunn was killed in action in the After Engineroom
when Mayo was damaged during the Anzio Invasion, presumably
from a mine. He was at his station in the After Engineroom
maintaining the "heart" of the ship. |

Leonard "Benny" Bennett, TM
3/c. Served on Mayo:3 August 1944 to 14 December
1945. Benny was the past and original USS Mayo Newsletter
editor. His efforts kept the crew together. |

Orlando "Big Ange" Angelini,
MMC. Served on Mayo:18 September 1940- 18 March
1946 "Ange" was on the Mayo from the day she was
commissioned to her decommissioning, never missing a trip or
action aboard his home of 5 1/2 years. |

Paul "Johnny" Johnson,
CWO. Served on Mayo:15 January 1941- 3 April 1943.
"Johnny" , along with Ray Hutchins, was our senior man,
having served in the Navy as a stoker on a the coal burner
Rochester in the 20's to a instuctor at Newport, RI in the
1950's. "Johnny" was a man everyone looked up to and admired;
as he had the skill and intelligence to teach the younger men
the skills they needed. Serving from ships such as Battleship
California and destroyer Mugford DD389, Johnny brought his
knowledge aboard Mayo . Johhny always said that Mayo was one
of his best duties of his naval career that spanned over 20
years. In this picture, "Johnny" is with his wife Irene.

Raymond "Hutch" Hutchins,
WTC. Served on Mayo:18 September 1940 to 18 March 1943.
Hutch was a plank owner on Mayo and served for three years
before being transferred to new constuction destroyer duty.
Hutch was an "old salt" by the time he went aboard Mayo having
served in the Asiatic fleet during the 1920's and 30's. A very
intelligent and rugged fellow, Hutch was very well respected
aboard ship. Ray's brother, Warren Hutchins , also served on
Mayo from 41-44 as WT2/c. Ray is pictured here with his wife
Mary around 1945. |

Mayo:3 August 1944 to 16 March 1946. |
Richard "Wheels" Slominski,
QM1/c. Served on Mayo:4 November 1943- 2 February
1946 Dick came aboard Mayo right after the Salerno invasion
, and participated in the Anzio Operations and Surrender of
the Japanese at Tokyo Bay. "Wheels" was a avid Mayo
Association member, participating in the newsletter, shipmate
correspondence and searching, and hosting great Mayo reunions
with his wife, Alfreda, and granddaughter, Christina Bass.

William "Quack" Quackenbush,
BMkr2. Served on Mayo:18 September 1940- 3 April
1943 "Quack" was a plankowner aboard the Merry Mayo and
served on her throughout the early convoy experiences. He was
transferred to the USS Fechteler and became a survivor of that
DE's sinking. "Quack" later was a member of the crew of the
destroyer Harlon Dickson. |

Bill was on Mayo during the actions at Salerno, Anzio, and all Pacific exploits. Bill was transferred off Mayo 2 days before her decommissioning.

Lt. Winkler was aboard Mayo as Chief Engineering Officer and was present at the surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay, Sept 2 1945.

Michael was aboard 5/2/43 to 5/22/44 after having joined the Navy on 1/22/43 in New York. He served aboard for both the Salerno and Anzio actions.

Nicholas Cortale
Served on Mayo:
Nicholas Cortale seen on his wedding day, December 15, 1945. He was on leave from the USS Mayo.

Roland Seno, S2/c.
Served on Mayo: May 1943 until 24 January 1944.
Seno served aboard during the Salerno Invasion but was killed when Mayo was damaged during the Anzio Invasion, presumably from a mine. Last known to be leaving the Pilot House before the explosion, he was never seen again.

Served on Mayo: 3 August 1944 to 16 March 1946. Tony served aboard from just after MAYO exited the Brooklyn Navy Yard to two days before decommissioning of the ship.
