Tales of the Kamikaze Hit on Macomb, 3 May 1945

I was on duty in the radio shack while we were under attack. When Kenneth Keith Kelley (KKK) shot off the machine gun directly over the radio shack, Ted Hoch and I typed in "bad signal" and ran out of the radio shack. The plane came in from the starboard side and looked as if it was going to hit the bridge so we took off running back aft. We got halfway and saw the plane was going to hit back aft, so we ran back towards the bridge.

In reference to the plane attack on May 3, 1945, we (Ken McElveen and myself) were on the O2 level, outside the shack on the starboard side when the plane came in. We ran aft and then changed direction to forward. I remember the plane hitting the gun mount as we returned to the shack. I was taken to the Executive Officer's quarters to cut the burned clothes and gloves off George Wanchick. He was still alive but died shortly thereafter.
