First Suisun Bay Strip trip.
November 2003.

In November 2003, the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. crew made its first West Coast strip trip to MARAD Reserve Fleet in Benecia, CA . The crew set to work on stripping the two Vietnam era LSTs Wahkiakum County and Tioga County which were both retired in the early 1970's. Highly desirable manuals, gauges, radio equipment, paperwork, lighting, 1968-dated lifejackets, and other valuable hardware were obtained for our 1967-1973 restoration effort. Later in the week, the DD850 crew stripped WW2 era vessels for our pier mate, USS Massachusetts. Of note, we obtained a original WW2 Edison oven for the Captain's Pantry. More importantly, we expanded our volunteer group to the West Coast to allow supporters and enthusaists on the Gold Coast to participate in preserving KENNEDY. Among our new volunteers are Len Barrett (USS J.P. Kennedy Jr. DD850), Dennis Ferguson (USS Orleck DD886), Dan Ferguson (SeeBees), Robert Mack (USS Fred T. Berry DD858), and Hans Brouwer (Seattle Museum of Science and History).
